One of the original carvers of wooden Indians, an ancestor of Frank Gallagher, who began carving in the 1840’s for a man that owned Gallagher’s Furniture store. He was one of approximately 12 full-blooded Man-Dan Indians alive during that time. The Man-Dan Indian village had been infected by small pox, and it almost completely wiped out the tribe. When the epidemic occurred, Ralph’s ancestor was away from the village working for a furniture maker, so he survived. The name of this furniture maker was Samuel Gallagher. As so many Indian laborers of that time had done, he changed his last name to that of his employer. One of his original Wooden Cigar Store Indians is displayed in the Smithsonian Institute. Ralph's sons, Frank and John Gallagher have continued on with the art of wood carving through the decades.
The Gallagher's prefer to use Aspen wood from Colorado to create these intriguing carved wooden sculptures. Each purchase of a Gallagher Wooden Cigar Store Indian includes a photocopy of an interview with Ralph Gallagher from the original June 1998 Issue of Arizona Highways magazine.
