Turquoise, the robin's egg blue gemstone worn by Pharaohs and Aztec Kings, is probably one of the oldest gemstones known. Yet, only its prized blue color, a color so distinctive that its name is used to describe any color that Resembles it, results in its being used as a gemstone. Turquoise has been, since about 200 B.C., extensively used by by southwestern U.S Native Americans and by many of the Indian tribes in Mexico. The Native American Jewelry or "Indian style" jewelry with turquoise mounted in or with silver is relatively new. Some believe this style of Jewelry was unknown prior to about 1880, when a white trader persuaded a Navajo craftsman to make turquoise and silver jewelry using coin silver. Prior to this time, the Native Americans had made solid turquoise beads, carvings, and inlaid mosaics. Recently, turquoise has found wide acceptance among people of all walks of life and from many different ethnic groups. The name turquoise may have come from the word Turquie, French for Turkey, because of the early belief that the mineral came from that country (the turquoise most likely came from Alimersai Mountain in Persia (now Iran) or the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, two of the world's oldest known turquoise mining areas.) Another possibility could be the name came from the French description of the gemstone, "pierre turquin" meaning dark blue stone.

Old Pawn Zuni Indian Bird Fetish Necklace

The first piece of this two piece necklace collection is a true work of days gone past. A great piece, this fetish necklace has been hand cut and strung with tortoise shell made sometime in the late 1960's or early 1970's. This art of fetish making is probably more closely associated with the name Tsikewa than any other family in Zuni. This particular piece was probably made by Mary Tsikewa or her daughter Lavina Kaskalla. Measuring 24" from end to end the bird fetishes average one inch in length and it has 71 total bird carvings. Each bird piece is carved with nice detail and mirrored on each side of the necklace. The heishi is of exceptional quality with high polish and great shaping. Old Pawn Heishi Necklace

The second old pawn piece is a ten strand high quality Heishi necklace. The strands measure 25" and have a turquoise accent. The bead cords are braided and unclasped and have deteriorated with age. This can easily be restrung but we suggest it be left in it's original form to maintain the integrity of the piece.

This is a Turquoise Collection that goes unmatched. This Old Pawn Kingman Turquoise Navajo Squash Blossom Set comes from an Estate sale right here in the heartland of the American Southwest. Long tradition of hand made artistry! Kingman turquoise of old these turquoise stones have nodules of rich blues among dark shades of matrix. The Navajo Native American naja is the "crescent shaped" part of this American Indian squash blossom necklace and is symbolic in ceremonies, particularly those that involve crop fertility. This turquoise naja measures 3 1/2" inches wide and 3" inches tall. It is displayed from a 23" inch seam bead necklace from end to end. Each individual squash measures 1" wide by 1 3/4" tall. Held together with a traditional hook and eye.

The second piece of this Kingman turquoise collection is an original Navajo single stone turquoise cuff bracelet. The blue color variations are extremely brilliant and the colors blend perfectly. The silver work in this turquoise cuff are from days of old. Complementing the squash blossom, this turquoise cuff bracelet is signed by the Navajo artist AMC, and features leaf work and three bands of sterling silver twist wire and hand stamped half round. The turquoise bracelet will fit a size 5 1/2" to a 6 1/2" wrist and measures 2 1/8" wide.

This traditional Gypsum Peace Pipe is an impressive hand made Indian artifact. This peace pipe was hand crafted out of natural wood. It has been adorned with genuine leather fringe, feathers, and brass cones. Plus, this hand carved peace pipe features some gorgeous hand stitched seed bead work. The seed beads come together to create a vibrant Native American traditional design. Genuine feathers have been included to serve as prayer symbols. This Peace Pipes measures 28" in length. Andy Abeita hand carved this gypsum and added various strikes and lines. The pipe bowl itself measures 2" tall and 4 1/2" long. The Dine' (or Navajo) People are a unique group of American Indians still living the traditional way of life throughout the four corners region of the Southwestern United States. The Navajo people have returned to the original name, the Dine' (pronounced di-nay'h), given to them by their holy people. The Dine' land (aka Navajo reservation) on top of Oak Creek Canyon is the largest reservation established for the Dine', covering about 25,000 sq. miles of land, and is located in parts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. The Navajo were the first of the southwestern Indians to produce metal jewelry. Around the mid-19th Century a Navajo Medicine Man, Atsidi Sani, convinced a Mexican blacksmith to teach him the art of working with metal. When the Navajo returned to their homeland in 1868 after their imprisonment at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, traders arrived in the area bringing silver coins with them. It was with these coins that the Navajo began to make silver jewelry.

This Navajo Made Ring that is reminiscent of enduring southwest Navajo style is extremely sturdy and durable. The large Kingman Turquoise cabochon is encircled in a hand cut scalloped sterling silver bezel with an extremely heavy hand stamped border. The beautiful turquoise stone is anchored to a graduated and hand etched silver feather work and Navajo tears. Made by noted Navajo artist Tom Ahasteen, this Native American Sterling Silver Ring measures 1 1/8"" tall and 1" wide. It will fit a size 12 to 15, Stamped Sterling and signed by the artist.
