It has been treasured by civilizations dating back to the Egyptians and Babylonians. The Egyptians used the Lapis stone to make paint and cosmetics. There is a Persian legend that the heavens attributed their blue color to a slab of Lapis that the earth rested upon. Lapis Lazuli is considered a sacred stone; therefore, many cultures buried it with their dead to protect and guide them in the afterlife.

Currently, the largest Native American Indian Reservation in the United States is the Navajo Reservation. It stretches across parts of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Many southwest Navajo silversmiths live and work on or within close proximity to the reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. Most Navajo silversmiths have learned their techniques and skills from a long line of family members. This traditional art form has been passed down from generation to generation. Navajo jewelry is classified as art; therefore, it is displayed in museums. Originally, silversmithing and the making of silver jewelry was meant solely for ceremonial tribal use, but as time went on, it became a source of income due to high tourist demand.

The Dine' (or Navajo) People are a unique group of American Indians still living the traditional way of life throughout the four corners region of the Southwestern United States. The Navajo people have returned to the original name, the Dine' (pronounced di-nay'h), given to them by their holy people. The Dine' land (aka Navajo reservation) on top of Oak Creek Canyon is the largest reservation established for the Dine', covering about 25,000 sq. miles of land, and is located in parts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. The Navajo were the first of the southwestern Indians to produce metal jewelry. Around the mid-19th Century a Navajo Medicine Man, Atsidi Sani, convinced a Mexican blacksmith to teach him the art of working with metal. When the Navajo returned to their homeland in 1868 after their imprisonment at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, traders arrived in the area bringing silver coins with them. It was with these coins that the Navajo began to make silver jewelry.

They primarily feed on ungulates, which they hunt by wearing them down in short chases. Gray wolves are typically apex predators throughout their range, with only humans and tigers posing significant threats to them.

The lost wax process involves carving a model from wax, addition of vents for casting, and a rubber mold around it. The rubber mold is cut in half, flask is inserted, the model is reassembled, and plaster of Paris is travels to the core of the mold through the flask. Once the flask is heated, the wax will melt away. A firm mold of the original wax shape is formed. The final step involves molten metal, most often silver or gold, is poured into the cast. The plaster is removed when the metal hardens, and the finished piece is polished.
