This is a spectacular example of Zuni artistry. This buckle and bolo set has some highly detailed Silversmithing. These gemstones and the Sterling Silver come together to create traditional thunderbird images. The Zuni artist was truly inspired combining high quality gemstones with impressive Silver work. The Zuni people often use natural Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Coral in their work in honor of Father Sky and Mother Earth. The photo is an excellent representation of the Custom Made Bolo Tie you'll receive.
The cowboy was born in 1866 with the first herd of Texas longhorns trailed across hundreds of miles of wild and dangerous country, filled with predators and hostile Indians, to the wide open town of Abilene.... created by the Kansas Pacific Railroad as the western frontier railhead for shipping cattle East. From that time on the big Texas cattle drives fed the market for a beef-hungry America. Six hundred thousand cattle came up the Texas trail in 1871 in herds of about 2,000 each led by a wild and reckless and tough bunch of young men with great courage and fortitude. Huge numbers of longhorn cattle had multiplied in Texas after the Civil War, the result of few predators, few fences and plenty of grass and water. They ran wild while Texas men went off to fight for the Confederacy. Cow-gathering was a challenge but getting a herd all the way to the Kansas railroad paid big. Early cowboys had very little grub (mostly corn meal and salted bacon,) used homemade saddles and chaps, no tents or tarps, braided their own rope from horsehair, and bragged they could go any place a cow could, and stand anything a horse could. Lay on your saddle blanket and cover with a coat was the Texas trail bed. The twelve-inch-barrel Colt was necessary equipment. Strong, lightweight and wiry men who were persevering and loyal defined a new American spirit of freedom and independence. Mothers shared great pride in seeing their sons grow up to be cowboys.

The classic image of the West, the Appaloosa Horse, was captured in time by an unknown Zuni artisan. This extremely detailed and precise inlay features Turquoise, Mother Of Pearl and Penn Shell handset in Sterling Silver channels. Thin gauge, silver channel work like this is very difficult to create since the heat necessary to lay the solder could easily melt or warp the silver. Although this Bolo is unsigned we believe this vintage piece was created sometime in the '60's.The Appaloosa Horse inlay measures 2-1/2" tall by 3-1/4" wide and the Sterling Silver tips, which include a small inlaid horse head on each end, measure almost 3" long. This Native American Bolo comes on a new 42" long, genuine black leather, six-ply bolo cord. This vintage bolo tie is in very good condition with very minor scratches and two small cracks in the body. Stones are very tight. This is the quality that made Zuni Inlay famous and this Handmade Zuni Bolo Tie is reflective of the styles of Frank Vacit, Lambert Homer, Leo Poblano and Teddy Weahkee... the great Zuni
artisans who began it all. This vintage Bolo was first purchased from The Heard Museum, a world-class Native American museum in Phoenix, Arizona & was purchased sometime between 1965 & 1972.
