This Antique Horse Hair Lap Blanket is a true one of a kind highly collectible piece of American history. We estimate that this rug was made before 1927. This lap blanket was made by the Stroock Company and has the Stroock Company label. Stroock Co. was purchased by the Pendleton Company in 1927 so this blanket is made before 1927 at least. Old Horse Hair Lap Blankets like this were used in horse drawn buggy or sleighs to keep people warm during the ride so its thick like wool. Made from genuine Horse Hair. Vintage Navajo Raised Outline Pastel Hand Woven Rug

This beautiful Vintage Navajo Raised Outline Pastel Hand Woven Rug is truly a collectible. It carries a rich history and is a functional piece of artwork that will bring beauty and distinction to your home. The tight weave and soft pastel colors make this one of the best rugs ever done by the artist Marie Watson. The artist used the raised outline technique to weave the gorgeous rug. The technique was developed during the 1950's in the western region of the Navajo reservation known as the Coal Mine Mesa area in Arizona. Today the raised outline rug is called the Newlands rug. This rug was acquired by the McGee's Gallery at Keam's Canyon, where it was then purchased by the original owner, Dr. D.H. Recently, our company acquired this rug through a trade. The antique hand woven Navajo wool rug is 3' feet 8" inches in length and 5' feet 6" inches in width.

The Raised Outline rug is now called the Newlands Rug. The reason for the name change is related to the enactment of the 1996 Navajo-Hopi Land Settlement Act. The intention of this bill was to reverse centuries of Navajo encroachment on Hopi land and to clarify reservation boundaries; therefore, mineral-rich acres in northern Arizona land that had been considered a "joint use area" could be leased for uranium, coal, and other minerals. The Navajo people refused to leave the designated Hopi land, so the land dispute had continued. Under this new legislation, any Navajos that remainined on Hopi land had to sign a 75-year lease with the Hopi tribe by March 31, 1996 or relocate. Beginning on April 1, 1996, those people that refused, would be forcibly removed from their homes. As the Coal Mine Mesa was on Hopi land, the Navajo had to relocate, and it is now a ghost town. The area given to the Navajo as part of the settlement was called the New Lands which centered around Sanders, Arizona. The Newlands style rug is a combination of three styles including Teec Nos Pos' pattern , Burntwater's pastel colors, and the Coal Mine Mesa's raised outline.

This is a beautiful example of fine Navajo artistry. This incredible hand-woven traditional rug is made entirely from genuine wool that is not dyed or colored at all. The white, gray, brown and black shades come from white and black sheep. For the different shades of gray, the black and white or cream wools are hand-mixed before being spun into yarn. This is a tight, symmetrical rug with a warp of 10 strands/inch and over 20 wefts per linear inch. This gorgeous genuine Navajo rug is 53" by 36". All of the wool for this rug has been hand-carded, spun and woven by Navajo rug weaver Louise Johnson. Louise is so old she was born before they officially recorded the birth-date when registering Native Americans. Because of this, she is not even sure how old she is, though she guesses between 85 and 90. Unfortunately, Louise will not be making many more rugs and we were lucky to get this one.
