The cowboy was born in 1866 with the first herd of Texas longhorns trailed across hundreds of miles of wild and dangerous country, filled with predators and hostile Indians, to the wide open town of Abilene.... created by the Kansas Pacific Railroad as the western frontier railhead for shipping cattle East. From that time on the big Texas cattle drives fed the market for a beef-hungry America. Six hundred thousand cattle came up the Texas trail in 1871 in herds of about 2,000 each led by a wild and reckless and tough bunch of young men with great courage and fortitude. Huge numbers of longhorn cattle had multiplied in Texas after the Civil War, the result of few predators, few fences and plenty of grass and water. They ran wild while Texas men went off to fight for the Confederacy. Cow-gathering was a challenge but getting a herd all the way to the Kansas railroad paid big. Early cowboys had very little grub (mostly corn meal and salted bacon,) used homemade saddles and chaps, no tents or tarps, braided their own rope from horsehair, and bragged they could go any place a cow could, and stand anything a horse could. Lay on your saddle blanket and cover with a coat was the Texas trail bed. The twelve-inch-barrel Colt was necessary equipment. Strong, lightweight and wiry men who were persevering and loyal defined a new American spirit of freedom and independence. Mothers shared great pride in seeing their sons grow up to be cowboys.

This exceptional Native American features five strands of genuine Turquoise twined with five strands of pink Angelskin Bamboo Coral. These two items provide beautiful contrasting colors of earth and sea. The necklace is 24" including 4" stamped Sterling Silver diamond-patterned cones that adorn each end of this piece of wearable art. Hook-eye and comb clasps finish the piece. There are four types of precious coral in Hawaii: black coral (Antipathidae), gold coral (Parazoanthidae), red or pink coral (Corallidae) and bamboo coral. Each of these has a different internal composition. Red and pink corals produce a calcite skeleton similar in hardness to ivory and pearls. Bamboo corals, on the other hand, produce a skeleton composed partially of calcite and partially of protein that is similar to the keratin in your fingernails. These alternating bands of material resemble a bamboo stalk; thus the corals' name. In Hawaii, black corals are found in 100-300 ft. of water, shallow enough to harvest using scuba equipment. Many harvesters, however, have died in pursuit of coral trees at the deep end of this range. Red, gold and bamboo coral are found between 1,000 and 1,500 ft; so harvesting is conducted with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or submarines.

This Native American-crafted necklace is formed of bronze and blue-green genuine Magnesite Turquoise oblong beads approximately 3/4" by 5/16" that form a pattern with hand-made Sterling Silver Aztec-pattern bench beads that measure 5/16" in diameter and bright red coconut discs. The ends are finished with a Sterling Silver hook-eye clasp. This piece of Native American artistry is an eye-catching item of jewelry perfect for a great sense of style. The Native American Jewelry or "Indian style" jewelry with turquoise mounted in or with silver is relatively new. Some believe this style of Jewelry was unknown prior to about 1880, when a white trader persuaded a Navajo craftsman to make turquoise and silver jewelry using coin silver. Prior to this time, the Native Americans had made solid turquoise beads, carvings, and inlaid mosaics.
