Native American Turquoise Silver Necklaces

Native American Turquoise jewelry consists of two types of categories: beadwork, and metalwork. Native American metalwork is fairly simple, consisting mainly of etching and hammering copper into Bracelets, Pendants, Rings, or Earrings or fashioning copper and silver into beads. After Navajo silver smithing , Pueblo and Hopi artists learned silver smithing from the Spanish, Metal jewelry art blossomed in the Southwest, like the squash blossom necklace, Navajo turquoise inlay rings, and Hopi silver overlay bracelets developed from new techniques with traditional designs.

Beads have been an important part of most native cultures. Native Americans used to trade for beads during the first contact with the European explorers and settlers. Native Americans would use the traded beads to make pouches, decorate there weapons, homes, clothing, etc. with the beads. Most Native American Beadwork was mostly crafted by hand by the Five Civilized tribes. The 5 Civilized Tribes consisted of 5 Native American nations, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole.
