Recently Charles Cheatham, a relative of the original owners of the Painted Desert Trading Post, which is located approximately 21 miles south of Holbrook, AZ, contacted our office here at Alltribes. After removing several items from his Native American collection of art and jewelry he'd acquired from this legendary trading post on Route 66, he wanted to give us first dibs on purchasing items for our large, high quality inventory.

Amid the 1940's, Dotch Windsor, a cattle rancher, settled in the Painted Desert area in Arizona. He chose land that overlooked the Dead River Wash, east of the Petrified Forest National Monument, and on the north side of Route 66 on which to build and operate the Painted Desert Trading Post. For the next several years, Windsor and his wife remained in business until they opted for a divorce in the 1950's. He married Joy Nevin and the two operated the trading post until their divorce in 1956. Windsor was forced into closing his beloved post after plans for a realignment of Route 66 made the post virtually inaccessible from the main highway. The old trading post building continues to defy odds and remain standing. Tourists are still drawn to the old site; however, a four wheel drive vehicle is needed to travel the soft dirt road. It is considered one of the top ten historical sites along Route 66.
