From the Heart of Zuni Land! This is a spectacular example of Zuni artistry. This buckle and bolo set has some highly detailed Silversmithing. The artist used hand cut stones of natural Sleeping Beauty Turquoise, genuine Red Gold Coral, and genuine Mother of Pearl to create colorful picturesque details in a masterful inlay. These gemstones and the Sterling Silver come together to create traditional designs. The Zuni artist was truly inspired combining high quality gemstones with impressive Silver work. The Zuni people often use natural Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Coral in their work in honor of Father Sky and Mother Earth. The bolo cord has a pair of Sterling Silver and Turquoise miniature wagon tips. The buckle is 1-3/4" by 2-5/8" with a 1-3/8" wide keeper on the back. The Zuni Indians learned to silversmith from the Navajo in the early 1870's. The Zuni, because they had permanent homes unlike the nomadic Navajo, were able to use many tools that the Navajo could not easily carry with them. With the lapidary wheels they began cutting stones and using the silver to hold their stones in patterns. Today, Zuni silversmiths are known for their lapidary skills. Both channel inlay (using precisely cut stones set on silver to form figures and designs) and cluster and needlepoint (setting small, similarly cut stones in geometric patterns) are traditional Zuni styles.
