Vintage Antique Linen Children's books circa 1910 Various Publishers Set of Four.
Every now and then we come across antiques that are so unusual and full of history. These are children's books from around 1910. They are printed on Muslin Linen. The publishers boast that they are ever-wear, never-tear and considering they still exist after nearly 100 years, the claim is valid. There is some wear, they're little frayed around the edges and have a few small stains here and there. Each book has worn a little differently. They include the titles: The Night Before Christmas (or) A visit from St. Nicholas from the Saalfield Publishing Co. 1904, Kids and Kiddies from the Saalfield Publishing Co. 1914, The Question Alphabet Book from the Platt & Monk Co., and Faithful Friends from the Charles E. Graham & Co. These children's books are a real piece of history. They are a window into the lives of those living just before World War 1. A great conversation piece and proud addition to any collection or display. We acquired this set in a trade with an old couple who were ready to pass on their old collection of antiques. They are being sold together in this set of four.
In the 19th century, advances in printing techniques made it possible to inexpensively print children's books in color on a woven, canvas-like cloth called muslin or linen. Around the turn of the century these books increased in popularity, advertising the claim that they could take a beating and would stand up against the stresses children could put on them. Leading up to the U.S.'s involvement in World War 1, Linen books became a favored medium for publishers due to the increased expense of other supplies going to the war effort. |
