Vintage 18th Century Old American COAL IRON 3496-CL
Take home a piece of history. This is a good one for a great looking display, and it could possibly serve as a practical piece as well. This is a well made replica of an old coal iron, just like the ones used in the 18th century. It has a working latch and hinge for easy opening, closing, and locking. The top has a wooden handle. This one has the ventilation openings on the sides to bring oxygen to the hot coals inside to keep up the heat. This iron is 4-5/8" long, 2" wide, and 4" tall. This is a great replica of years gone by. Now, this one looks like it could be used as a clothing iron. However, we suggest that you don't because the coal irons are notorious for dropping soot on the clothing.Humankind has been smoothing out the wrinkles since the 8th century. At the beginning smoothing stones were rubbed up against the cloth to create friction and heat, which removed the wrinkles. the 16th century saw the dawn of the sad iron, which utilizeda flat bottom iron surface that was heated with a flame and then spread across the clothing. Later came the linen presses. They used a pair of boards that sandwiched a flattened piece of cloth back into smoothness. Then in 1883 the electric iron was invented creating a modern breed of irons with easily adjusted temperature levels, and powerful steam jets. |
