Thomas Singer, is known throughout the world for his jewelry work. His overlay pieces incorporate the most traditional of Navajo design - designs that have endured for years and years. Many of these designs are of Navajo rugs and other traditional designs. Jeweler Thomas Singer is a Navajo Indian from Winslow, Arizona. Tommy Singer states, "Every piece is made with the meanings from my traditional ways - the Navajo way of living, my father was a silversmith. He taught me and wanted me to continue this trade. Overlay is created by "sweating" or soldering, two pieces of silver together. The top piece contains a design element which is meticulously cut out of silver. The bottom piece is oxidized and often textured to produce a contrasting background. Then carefully filed, buffed and polished to produce this fine finish.
