Stainless steel was invented in 1913 by metallurgist Harry Brearly while trying to improve gun barrels. The key to stainless steel's stainless properties is the addition of the element chromium to the steels mix. Other metals such as Nickel, Molybdenum, Carbon, and Titanium can also be added to give the steel various other properties that may be desirable depending on the steel's use. The mix of metals in steel can become complicated and make many amazing things possible like skyscrapers, submarines, and the St. Loius Arch. |
