TURQUOISE: The Lucky Stone

When workmen opened the tomb of Queen Zen of Egypt, who died 7000 years ago, they discovered, among other things, four beautiful gold and turquoise bracelets encircling the arm of the mummy. The ancient Egyptians were captivated by Turquoise and sent large expeditions of up to 3000 workers under military escort into the Sinai Peninsula for the sole purpose of mining Turquoise and other minerals. Over the centuries, the use of Turquoise spread over the world to many lands. From Persia, it spread over the hills to Turkey and from there to the countries of Europe. Early French and Italian traders who carried the stones out of Turkey gave its modern name Pierre Turquoise, "Turkish Stone".
