The handle has been covered in genuine buckskin leather for the traditional Native American look and natural textures. Baby carriers or cradleboards of wood were made like boxes on the Northwest Coast and often painted and carved. Apache carriers are made of slats bound on a hoop. Eastern forms consist of a board with a face guard and footrest. Iroquois footrests are solid steps: the Alogonkian boards laced in position as a footrest. All in all a cradleboard served as a hands free baby carrier and in my opinion a child bound and swaddled was a content baby, there is something about the swaddling that comforts a baby. |
