Pre 1900 Genuine Antique Turn of the Century Northeast Indian Hardwood Bow Leather Quiver & Arrows 0070-NC
Genuine Antique Turn of the Century Northeast Indian Hardwood Bow Leather Quiver & Arrows.
This is the real deal. This beautiful hand carved hardwood bow measures 42" in length and has managed to stay paired with its leather quiver and set of four arrows for over a hundred years. The quiver is the most amazing item in the set. Beautifully preserved, it demonstrates the craftsmanship and skill of the person who constructed it. The hand carved arrows measure between 21" and 23" in length and still include their original fletching attached to the shaft with genuine sinew. They have survived, protected from the elements in their hand made leather quiver. Unfortunately, the flint tipped arrowheads have been removed. This is the case with many antique Native American arrows due to idiots who only saw value in the arrowheads and figured they were worth ripping off to keep or to sell apparently dismissing the rest of this piece of American history. Nonetheless, this antique pre-1900s bow, arrows, and quiver is a magnificent showpiece for your collection. This set came to us with little provenance. It is from the east coast, and is roughly 120 years old. It was probably designed for use on horseback or for a younger archer based on its size. It was acquired by a customer of Richard's almost 60 years ago already in the condition that you see toady. From there it was carefully stored in the dry Southwest for 60 years until a move forced it out of storage and eventually into Richard's hands in a trade for jewelry. The bow looks to be made from Cherry or Walnut.
Indian warriors gained status not only from their success in battle, but their skills in crafting hunting tools and weapons. Typically Bow woods used are Ash, Hickory, Black Locust, Choke Cherry, Osage Orange, Oak, Walnut, Birch, Serviceberry, and Mulberry woods. Arrows were made mostly from Dogwood, Yaupon holly, Witch Hazel and Willow because they could be smoothed and straighten easily. Arrow points made of noviculite or obsidian and were chipped with a moose and deer antler. Ceremonial rituals focused on power, strength, healing, wisdom and intuition in life's journey and use artifacts such as this bow to connect the warrior to his spirit guides.
