Benton Clark (1895 - 1964). Growing up in Coshocton, Ohio, Clark was inspired by the picturesque woods and valleys surrounding his home near the old Ohio Canal. A group of artists were working there, and one of them, Arthur Woelfle, gave Clark his first lessons and encouraged him to seek further training. He studied at the National Academy of Design in the early 20th century and began illustrating for magazines such as Good Housekeeping and McCall's. Painting in the dramatic style of Fredric Remington, Clark's images of important events in the American West seen as they could be played out on stage. |
