This is a beautiful example of Navajo Indian silver work. This Native American Indian Sterling Silver squash blossom holds gorgeous hand cut cabs of genuine Turquoise. Each cab of this gorgeous blue-green Turquoise is surrounded by some very impressive Silver work. The hand cut Sterling Silver has been hand stamped with traditional southwestern designs, and hand twisted Sterling Silver wires give this one extra ornamentation. The Sterling Silver bench beads give off their irresistible high shine. This squash blossom is 23-1/2" long. The naja is 2" long at the center, so this necklace hangs like it's 25" long. The matching post earrings are 1-3/4" in length. Stamped Sterling and signed by the Navajo artist Marcella James.
There are many legends about Turquoise; The Pima consider it to bring good fortune and strength and believe that it helps overcome illness. The Zuni believe that blue turquoise was male and of the sky and green turquoise was female and of the earth. Pueblo Indians thought that its color was stolen from the sky. In Hopi legend the lizard who travels between the above and the below, excretes turquoise and that the stone can hold back floods. The Apache felt that turquoise on a gun or bow made it shoot straight. The Navajo consider it as good fortune to wear and believe it could appease the Wind Spirit.
