This Navajo Bracelet is a classic example of hand made Native American jewelry. The banded Sterling Silver cuff holds hand cut cabochons of genuine number 1 grade Lapis. These polished deep blue stones are lined with hand made Sterling Silver drops. The royal blue hues contrast nicely with the white shine of the Sterling Silver. This Lapis bracelet is just under 1/2" wide and it'll fit a 6" to a 7" wrist. Stamped Sterling and signed by Navajo artist JoAnn Yazzie. The Dine' (or Navajo) People are a unique group of American Indians still living the traditional way of life throughout the four corners region of the Southwestern United States. The Navajo people have returned to the original name, the Dine' (pronounced di-nay'h), given to them by their holy people. The Dine' land (aka Navajo reservation) on top of Oak Creek Canyon is the largest reservation established for the Dine', covering about 25,000 sq. miles of land, and is located in parts of Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. The Navajo were the first of the southwestern Indians to produce metal jewelry. Around the mid-19th Century a Navajo Medicine Man, Atsidi Sani, convinced a Mexican blacksmith to teach him the art of working with metal. When the Navajo returned to their homeland in 1868 after their imprisonment at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, traders arrived in the area bringing silver coins with them. It was with these coins that the Navajo began to make silver jewelry.
Lapis lazuli is a beautiful opaque stone ranging in color from a deep blue to denim. Lapis lazuli can be made of several minerals besides lazurite, namely sodalite, hauyne, calcite (white streaks), and pyrite (metallic streaks or flecks). Stones that are deep blue with small patches of pyrite and calcite are considered the most valuable. The ancients believed that divine favor and success came to those wearing Lapis. It was largely reserved for royalty and was highly prized by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt, as can be seen by its prominent use with gold in many of the treasures recovered from pharaonic tombs. It is still extremely popular today.
