Native American Turquoise Silver Concho Belt.
This concho belt is large and full of character. This one features a buckle and ten individual conchos. The buckle and each concho holds a large cabochon of genuine Turquoise. This Turquoise delivers its natural dark green colors to this belt. The Turquoise stones have each been set in a Silver bezel that was soldered to a hand stamped sheet of nickel Silver. The nickel Silver backings have been artfully hand cut with scalloped edges. Each concho is backed with leather. Made in our shop. The buckle on this belt is 2-1/4" by 3-1/8". The ten conchos range in width from 1-5/8" to 2-1/4", and they range in length from 2-1/4" to 2-3/4". Stamped HANDMADE. Signed by the Navajo Indian jewelry artist. The leather belt can be cut to fit. Concha belts are one of the most striking articles of Indian Jewelry. The medallions or plates of silver vary in number according to size. The older type had holes in the center, separated by a bar, through which was passed the strap forming the belt. The first belts were made only of concha's, with leather thongs used for fastening. Later a silver harness buckle was used, then slides of soft copper were used to attach and slide the concha's on belts and finally elaborate buckles replaced the leather thongs and simple buckles. The use of turquoise and other adornment on concha's date from the 1920's.
