The earliest inhabitants of Cananea who can be identified are Indians. There are innumerable sites of their settlements near here. From pottery shards sent to the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico, these Indians have been identified as the Hohokam who settled extensively throughout the Southwest from about 1100 to 1400 A.D. The Pimas, Papagos and Apache lived near here until well after the 1850's.
