Native American Rawhide Beaded Lance with Shoulder Strap by Navajo Indian artist Clara Vasquez 0980-NC
Native American Rawhide Beaded Lance with Shoulder Strap by Navajo Indian artist Clara Vasquez.
This impressive lance measures 54" from the metal point to the end of the handle. The shaft is hand wrapped in rawhide and accented with decorative beading, leather fringe and genuine deer horn buttons. The metal spear tip is securely attached by sinew to the head. Bullet casings act as jackets for the genuine feathers and add a touch of old western flair. Powerful symbols dress this ceremonial artifact and it would make a fabulous gift. It is attractive in any setting and has the artistic character to stand alone or compliment similar pieces of collected works. This one includes and shoulder strap strung with wooden beads and deer horn buttons in an alternating pattern with the black feathers. Due to the hand mad nature of this item, bead work, leather, and spear tips may vary slightly from piece to piece.
The lance or spear is an important element in Native American culture and was used chiefly as a hunting tool. It grew to play a role in ornamental dress and as a weapon in battle. The lance is another example of the full use Indians made of their environment.
