Perfect from top to bottom! This Native American hand carved Kachina is amazing. This impressive Shalako Kachina Doll was made by Bertha Lopez and Eloise Jones, master Navajo Kachina carvers from Ganado, AZ. This Kachina Doll was made the traditional old fashioned way. It was masterfully hand carved out of genuine cottonwood root. The Navajo artists used the natural shape of the root to form the graceful curve of the body. This Kachina Doll was painted by hand with bright and vibrant colors to help bring life to the traditional designs. Plus, this Kachina Doll has been hand etched with the perfect amount of detail giving it a sense of rich texture. This Shalako Kachina Doll is 31" tall (including the wooden base), and about 2-3/4" wide with a 5-1/2" base. Signed by the Native American artist including census number and labeled Yellow Corn.
The Hopi Shalako towers seven or eight feet in the air, a long, shoulder-less figure that bows and dips as he moves in a most graceful manner. The Hopi Shalako ceremony is held infrequently. The basic intent is probably that of bringing the cloud supernaturals to the Hopi mesa and causing them to remain in the general vicinity of the villages and fields of the tribal lands.
