Native American Indian Corn Maiden Shalako Kachina Doll Navajo Made Artist Signed 0592-KD
Native American Indian Corn Maiden Shalako Kachina Doll Navajo Made Artist Signed.
This one is cool. It has a lot of style. Hand made by Bertha Lopez and Eloise Jones, master Navajo Kachina carvers from Ganado, AZ. The combination of materials and artistry is what makes these kachinas so wonderful. This Shalako Kachina Doll was made the traditional old fashioned way. Masterfully hand carved out of genuine cottonwood root and painted by hand with bright and vibrant colors to help bring life to the traditional designs. The Navajo artists used the natural twist and bends of the root to form the body on this one. Plus, this Kachina Doll has been hand etched with the perfect amount of detail giving it a sense of rich texture. This Shalako Kachina Doll is 22-1/4" tall (including the wooden base), and about 1-1/2" wide. Signed by the Native American artist including census number and labeled Corn Maiden.
The Hopi Shalako towers seven or eight feet in the air, a long, shoulder-less figure that bows and dips as he moves in a most graceful manner. The Hopi Shalako ceremony is held infrequently. The basic intent is probably that of bringing the cloud supernaturals to the Hopi mesa and causing them to remain in the general vicinity of the villages and fields of the tribal lands.
