This jewelry comes from the Arnold Roossin Collection. Roossin owned a trading post in downtown Scottsdale for many years. He passed away recently and Richard was able to buy up his remaining collection which included rugs, kachinas, jewelry, and artwork of all kinds. This old pawn concho belt was part of that collection and was made over 30 years ago. This means it was made with high grade natural Turquoise, traditional techniques, and a classic design.
Turquoise is a highly sought-after mineral and is possibly the most valuable, non-transparent mineral in the jewelry trade. It has been mined for eons since at least 6000 BC by early Egyptians. Its history also includes beautiful ornamental creations by Native Americans and Persians. Its popularity is still quite strong today. Most specimens are cryptocrystalline, meaning that the crystals can only be seen by a microscope. The finest turquoise comes from Iran but is challenged by stone found in the southwestern United States. The name comes from a French word, which means stone of Turkey, from where Persian material passed on its way to Europe.
