Native American Genuine Turquoise Hand Made Sterling Silver Concho Belt by Emerson 2282-CN
Native American Genuine Turquoise Hand Made Sterling Silver Concho Belt by Emerson.
Hand made by Navajo artist Jimmy Emerson. This particular design came along in the 1950s from the old Harvey Santa Fe railroad stores. They call it Route 66 jewelry. Because, between the 1950s and 1970s, if you were on a road trip on Route 66 you would see Harvey's stores on the side of the road all throughout the southwest. Richard bought the rights and owns the master to this Harvey concho belt. The buckle and each of the twelve conchos hold nuggets of genuine Turquoise surrounded with hand stamped traditional southwestern designs. Available with a high shine polish or Santa Fe antiqued finish. Made in our shop. The buckle is 3" by 2-1/2". Each of the 12 conchos are 1-1/2" by 2". The leather belt can be cut to fit. Send us your belt size. Stamped Sterling and Signed by the artist J E.
Concho belts are one of the most striking articles of Native American Indian Jewelry. The medallions or plates of silver vary in number according to size. The older type had holes in the center, separated by a bar, through which was passed the strap forming the belt. The first belts were made only of conchas, with leather thongs used for fastening. Later a silver harness buckle was used, then slides of soft copper were used to attach and slide the conchos on leather belts. Later, elaborate buckles with Turquoise or traditional designs replaced the leather thongs and simple buckles. The use of turquoise and other adornment on conchos dates back to the early 1920's. A wide range of materials and designs have evolved from the early concha belts and with every concho being hand crafted, each concho belt is a unique piece of art.
