Native Americans of the southwest have paired Turquoise with red and orange materials in their jewelry for a long time. Its a beautiful combination of color contrasts. But the tradition is thousands of years old, rooted in symbolic meaning and regional materials. The original materials of the ancient American Indians would have been shell or pipestone, but now red Corals have become the standard because they are hard and easily polished. The red, white, and blue effect created when set with Turquoise and Silver imparts a whole new patriotic meaning to the ancient American color scheme.
