This one was made the old fashioned way, intricately carved out of genuine soft wood by hand. This is a highly collectible work of art that will grow in value over time. The colorful mask displays the traditional features of the First Mesa dancer with its horn-like headdress and hand painted rain cloud symbols. This Kachina Doll is 11-1/2" tall (including the wooden base) and 6" wide. It is decorated with genuine buckskin, feathers, and fur. Signed by the Navajo Indian Artist including census number.
There are more than 250 different kachinas, each with its own separate attributes, representing everything from animals to abstract concepts. Kachina Dolls are models of the Kachinas and represent their likeness and traits. The dolls are gifts given to children and families in hope of future abundance and health as well as tools for education. The Hopi were the original Kachina doll carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. When the Kachinas return to the spirit world at the end of the planting, they return with the prayers of the Hopi that we might all continue on this earth for another round in the circle of life.
