This brilliant Eagle kachina was stamped by hand into a piece of genuine leather and artfully hand painted. The leather has great natural texture and tone, it really brings out the colors. This stamped leather painting is 10" tall by 8" wide including the wooden mount. The rustic wood is in fine condition and complements the composition perfectly. This painting is signed by the Navajo artist Virgil. This vintage original art is the perfect gift and it's highly collectible.
This vintage artwork is from the Arnold Roossin Collection. Roossin owned a trading post in downtown Scottsdale for many years. He passed away recently and Richard was able to buy up his remaining collection which included rugs, kachinas, jewelry, and artwork of all kinds. This stamped leather painting is part of that collection and was made over 30 years ago making it a real classic.
There are more than 250 different kachinas, each with its own separate attributes, representing everything from animals to abstract concepts. Kachina Dolls are models of the Kachinas and represent their likeness and traits. The dolls are gifts given to children and families in hope of future abundance and health as well as tools for education. The Eagle and its beautiful plumage represent strength, awareness, and power. They are known as the ruler of the sky and the messenger to the heavens. This sacred Kachina is the overseer of all the kachinas and is the honored guest who receives many presents. Each year Kachinas come, they walk upon the earth and they dance to bring life and renewal, distribute gifts to the children, and reinforce the connection between the spirit world and the people. When the Kachinas return to the spirit world at the end of the planting, they return with the prayers of the Hopi that we might all continue on this earth for another round in the circle of life.
