Monumental Apache Style Hand Coiled Olla Basket - Almost 4 Feet Tall 0125-BSK
Monumental Apache Style Hand Coiled Olla Basket - Almost 4 Feet Tall.
This enormous basket is beyond impressive! This hand coiled basket is over 44" tall, thats close to 4 feet in height, and will be an exciting and engaging addition to any collection or decor. It features an attractive, Southwestern Apache Indian design with traditional figures and animal images. This basket is many years old but has taken only the slightest wear, just a couple small breaks in the weave on the lower portion of the body. They are hardly noticeable on the vast expanse of this remarkable basket. The soft color scheme and natural colors make this a great accent for any Southwest room. This hand coiled basket is made like coiled pottery. Thin strips of fibers, wood, leaves, or grass are wrapped into a bundle which is coiled around in a continuous spiral. This basket comes from Richard's personal collection. It is hand woven, 44" tall, 25" wide, and has a 79" circumference. It will hold a lot of stuff. This basket is non-Indian made. If this basket were made by an actual Apache Indian basket weaver it would go for somewhere around $12,000 to $15,000. Thankfully we're able to offer a basket of the same style at a mere fraction of the cost.
Baskets were first made at least 9,000 years ago - long before pottery was invented. Woven from a variety of plant materials by three basic techniques - plaiting, twining, and coiling - baskets had many uses. Flat trays were used for serving food and for winnowing seeds and parching them with hot coals. Deep baskets covered with resin were made to carry water. Some were woven very tightly for cooking with hot stones. Others were used for storage or carrying burdens. |
