Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Wedding Vase Pottery.

Fine pottery such as this is distinguished by its beauty and balance. This Black on Black Traditional Design pot is of prime quality with delicately hand coiled walls and hand stone polished to a high shine. This is an excellent piece of art with its hand painted designs completely surrounding the walls. The handle of this vase was tragically broken off during handling. We have repaired it and the damage is barely visible. The repaired handle is solid and as secure as it was originally. It stands ~12" tall, ~7" wide, it has a pair of ~3/4" openings and it's ~20-1/2" in circumference. Signed by the artist Alonso Meraz.

Technically and aesthetically, Casas Grandes pottery equals or surpasses the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest. It is made with clay from the mountains high above the village of Mata Ortiz, painted with human hairbrushes and natural pigments (minerals and roots of plants). It is hand-formed, without the use of a potter's wheel, and is dung fired.

For centuries, the Indian peoples of the Southwest have fashioned pots from the native clay and baked them beneath the fiery desert sun.
