Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Mora 0057-PT
Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Mora.
This is a classic Mata Ortiz design from Casas Grandes Valley. Hand coiled without the use of a potter's wheel, this piece of pottery is a true one of a kind. It's amazing how they can sit down and hand paint these pots with such precision without any measurements or sketches. The smooth, stone polished surface conceals the fact that this pot was hand coiled from natural clay. This is an excellent piece of art, an addition to your collection to be proud of. Signed by the Mata Ortiz artist Juan Mora on the bottom. It stands 4-1/4" tall, 5-1/2" wide, with a 17-1/2" circumference, and a 1-3/4" opening.
The Inspiration of Casas Grandes pottery is taken from Casas Grandes tradition. The renaissance of this beautiful pottery began in the early 1960's, following the Amerind Foundation's excavation of the nearby Paquime ruins in 1958. Until that time there was little interest in the antiquities of the area. After the excavation, however, a new awareness developed. Technically and aesthetically, Casas Grandes pottery equals or surpasses the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest. It is made with clay from the mountains high above the village of Mata Ortiz and painted with human hair brushes and natural pigments (minerals and roots of plants). It is hand-formed, without the use of a potter's wheel, and dung fired.
