Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Corona 1111-8029-PT
Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Corona.
This is a unique design from Casas Grandes Valley. The painting on this pot is done entirely by hand with machine like accuracy. The rows of linear designs repeat and stack like the windows of a large skyscraper giving this pot a great texture and austere beauty. The smooth stone polished surface conceals the fact that this pot was hand coiled from natural clay without a potter's wheel. The hand painted designs completely surround the walls of this pot and were done without any measurements or sketches. An addition to your collection to be proud of. It stands 6-1/2" tall, 6" wide, has a 20" circumference, and a 3-1/2" opening at the top. Signed by the Mata Ortiz artist Vidal Corona.
Technically and aesthetically, Casas Grandes pottery equals or surpasses the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest. It is made with clay from the mountains high above the village of Mata Ortiz, painted with human hairbrushes and natural pigments (minerals and roots of plants). It is hand-formed, without the use of a potter's wheel, and is dung fired. The Inspiration for Casas Grandes pottery is taken from the ancient Casas Grandes tradition. The renaissance of this beautiful pottery began in the early 1960's, following the Amerind Foundation's excavation of the nearby Paquime ruins in 1958. Until that time there was little interest in the antiquities of the area. After the excavation, however, a new awareness developed.
