Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Dazzler Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Mora  0019-PT

Mata Ortiz Hand Coiled Indian Dazzler Pottery by Casas Grandes artist Mora.

Top Notch Pottery! An exceptional design from Casas Grandes Valley. Flawless hand painted traditional interlacing designs seem to jump off of the smooth pottery walls. It's amazing how they can sit down and hand paint these pots with such precision without any measurements or sketches. This pot has a mind boggling amount of fine line free hand detail. The smooth surface conceals the fact that this pot was hand coiled from natural clay without a potter's wheel. This is an excellent piece of art, an addition to your collection to be proud of. Signed by the Mata Ortiz artist Julio Mora on the bottom. It stands 5-1/2" tall, 5-3/4" wide, with a 18-1/4" circumference, and a 2" opening.

The Inspiration for Casas Grandes pottery is taken from the ancient Casas Grandes tradition. The renaissance of this beautiful pottery began in the early 1960's, following the Amerind Foundation's excavation of the nearby Paquime ruins in 1958. Until that time there was little interest in the antiquities of the area. After the excavation, however, a new awareness developed. Technically and aesthetically, Casas Grandes pottery equals or surpasses the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest. It is made with clay from the mountains high above the village of Mata Ortiz and painted with human hair brushes and natural pigments (minerals and roots of plants). It is hand-formed, without the use of a potter's wheel, and dung fired.

We understand the value and collectible nature of southwestern hand made Casas Grandes Pottery. We realize the cultural and historical significance behind the pottery of Mata Ortiz. So, to ensure you that this is indeed true Mata Ortiz Pottery hand made the traditional way, a Certificate of Authenticity has been included with this item.
