Hopi Indian Paralyzed Kachina on Mudhead Kachina Doll by Native American artist Milton Howard.
These two are full of life! This amazing Kachina Doll was hand carved by Hopi Indian artist Milton Howard. It features a Mudhead Kachina carrying a Paralyzed Kachina to the dances. You can really feel the load on the Mudhead's shoulder's when you look at this lifelike duo. This is the only pair like this we've seen by Milton, a real one of a kind here. This Paralyzed and Mudhead Kachina doll duo are superb in detail, from the fine lines of the feather work to the hand carved Turquoise jewelry. The time, effort, and talent is evident with every stroke in this carving. Milton uses stain to bring out the natural grain of the traditional cottonwood root and paint to enhance and show more detail. He takes the time and patience it demands to carve the remarkably small lines and details entirely from wood. This Hopi Indian Kachina Doll is 12" tall by about 6" wide. Signed - M. Howard. Milton Howard, master kachina doll carver, was born on Feb. 8, 1964 in Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. His father, also a kachina carver, is from the Third Mesa area, and his mother is from the Rocky Ridge area. He is married and has three children. He took up carving as a young boy, learning from other members of his family, but he was not serious about it until he was living in Albuquerque, in his early twenties, going to school to be an electrician and carving with his cousins, Jerry and Dan Bert, in his free time. He sold his dolls to his classmates, carving kachinas for orders only. At about 30 years of age he made the decision to start carving full time. His art is now found in the finest galleries around the world and because his work is extraordinary and his prices are so reasonable, many serious collectors have obtained his dolls. The intricate details symbolize a lot of his beliefs, and what he has come to know as very sacred and divine to his culture.
