Amber is a birthstone for the Zodiac sign of Taurus. In ancient times, people believed that amber could increase the powers of magicians and warlocks. Amber is made from a syrup-like resin that dripped out of the pine trees of the Carboniferous and Pleistocene periods. This resin was covered in dirt and sediment, and under heat and pressure it fossilized into amber. At times the tree resin would ooze all over a prehistoric insect or leaf and then fossilize into amber with the specimen inside. Amber pieces with organic prehistoric specimens are especially valuable both monetarily and scientifically.
