This one is for the art lover with refined tastes. This is an incredible, high quality hand coiled pot with delicate thin walls. This pottery is a product of the old Acoma pueblo of Sky City, New Mexico (known as Aak'u to the Native American locals). Aak'u is the oldest city in the United States. It is truly an old pueblo, it sits high on a mesa 5,000 feet above sea level, and it has no electricity or running water. This one was hand painted by a master artist. The traditional hand etched designs are perfect. This Acoma Indian pot is 14-1/2" tall, 3-1/2" long and 14-1/2" wide. Signed on the bottom by the Acoma Indian artist RK Sanchez.
For nearly twenty centuries pottery has been made and used in the American Southwest. The technology probably came from Mexico where it's cultural application served a different purpose. In the Southwest, pottery is principally used as containers. While pottery making is much older in Mexico, Central and South America, perhaps the oldest pottery in the Southwest has been found in southern Arizona, dating to 300 B.C.
