1940's Authentic Vintage Navajo Hand Woven Wool Rug - 2' x 2-1/2'  1251-RUG

1940's Authentic Vintage Navajo Hand Woven Wool Rug - 2' x 2-1/2'.

This rug is amazing! This Authentic Vintage Navajo Indian Rug is a true one of a kind and a highly collectible work of hand made Native American art. We estimate that this rug was made around the early 1940's. It was made the traditional old fashioned way and spun by hand. This Navajo made traditional Rug was masterfully created from genuine wool. It has been given exceptional details, a unique design, and a beautiful color scheme. This rug is in excellent condition but has an even distribution of gray stains and a little bleeding around the black lines. The gorgeous southwestern Indian design was created from tan, brown, creme, and black wool that was colored with dyes made from natural vegetation indigenous to the Navajo Indian reservation. This rug is a true one of a kind collectors item! If you are looking for a genuine Navajo rug with a unique design look no further, you found it! This rug is 30-1/2" x 25-1/2" or about 2-1/2 feet long by 2 feet wide.

This rug is from the Arnold Roossin Collection. Roossin owned a trading post in downtown Scottsdale for many years. He passed away recently and Richard was able to buy up his remaining collection which included rugs, kachinas, jewelry, and artwork of all kinds. This rug is dated based on information we received from his records as well as its characteristics including the weave and design.

According to Navajo (Dine') legend, it was the deity known as Spider Woman who taught a young Dine' shepherdess who was shivering from the cold the art of weaving upon a loom. After teaching her to sheer sheep, card, and spin wool Spider Woman told her: "My husband, Spider Man, constructed the weaving loom making the cross poles of sky and earth cords to support the structure; the warp sticks of sun rays, lengthwise to cross the woof; the heralds of rock crystal and sheet lightning to maintain original condition of fibers. For the batten, he chose a sun halo to seal joints, and for the comb he chose a white shell to clean strands in a combing manner." Spider Woman then warns the newly named Weaving Woman to "walk the Middle Way," keeping her life in balance and not to do too much of one thing. Good advice for someone taking on the challenge of weaving a large rug. Since Weaving Woman, the Dine' have always been accomplished weavers through the generations, hoping to pay proper homage to the Spider Woman and her husband.

We understand the true value and nature of hand crafted Indian art. And, we recognize it's important to know that the artist is truly a member of a Native American tribe. So, to ensure you that this is the real deal, a Certificate of Authenticity has been included with this item.
